Smarter Sustainability in Greenwood Lake
Smarter Sustainability starts with shopping: We want to improve our recycling percentage, which is 21% among Greenwood Lake residents for the last 12 months, lower than the national US average of 32%, which is still behind European countries at 40%. Manufacturers of consumer goods are beginning to offer better alternatives for us consumers, so try to be more selective about packaging materials. Look for the ones that are easier to separate and sort. That way, when you’re finished with the container, you’ll know if it gets recycled, or goes into the waste stream. And avoid ALL plastic bags since they are NOT recyclable.
Next is sorting: Knowing what we can and cannot recycle saves time and money in the long run. The information on this page can help you remember what goes where. You can download the Recycling Guide, below, and post it in the kitchen to help remind you which things to separate and where to stow it.
Note: To all residents, per Chapter 63 of the Village Code, garbage cans are to be moved to the rear of the residence within 24 hours of garbage pickup.
> Leaves and grass clippings are to be put in biodegradable brown paper bags.
> If you have bulk items that need to be picked up you must call the garbage company at 866-342-5497 and arrange to have them picked up. They will give you a pickup date. It would be helpful if you also notify the Building Department when you do this to avoid unnecessary violations. Do NOT put these items out until the scheduled pickup date.
> TVs, computers, and other electronic waste items are NOT picked up by the Village or the garbage contractor. Please look for specific dates and times from community organizations about recycling these items. Thank you.
If you have any questions please call the Village Hall at 845-477-9215.
